Candee was a prolific painter, but having no financial incentive to sell his paint-ings, he did not allow them enter the marketplace during his lifetime. Between 1865 and 1870, he traveled and sketched extensively in Pennsylvania, finishing his sketches in his New Haven studio. He studied in Rome, where his roommate from 1870-1871 was George Inness, whose influence can be seen in many of his later works.
